What is Web Hosting?

Website hosting is a service which allocates space for people to display their websites on servers that are connected to the Internet 24/7. These servers are powerful computers that have huge hard drives, or an array of hard drives. Space is then rented to those who want a “website presence” on the Internet. The servers are assigned IP (Internet Protocol) numbers so that they may be found by other computers linked to the internet. Every server on the internet has a unique IP address.

It is on these servers that all your web files are stored, be they HTML files (web pages), graphic files, CSS files, Javascripts etc.

When you search via your browser for a certain web page, the request travels across the internet to the appropriate server where that web page is held. If the request for that page is successful then the page will load into your browser and display the site.

Website hosting companies charge fees to set up, configure and maintain the space your site contains on their servers. These fees are usually charged monthly. For this fee, they allow you to save your web files on their server and make them available upon request from other servers.
